Frequently asked questions

How much paint do I need for a room?
A gallon typically covers about 350 to 400 square feet. Multiply the room's perimeter by the ceiling height, subtract doors and windows, and divide by the coverage listed on the can. Most rooms need two coats, so plan for double. Ask our staff if you'd like help with the math.
Do I need to prime before painting?
Primer is recommended on bare drywall, new or bare wood, stains, patched areas, glossy surfaces, and when making a big color change. It helps the topcoat stick and look even. If the wall is clean, sound, and already painted in a similar color, you can often skip it.
How long should I wait between coats?
Water-based paints are usually dry to the touch within an hour and ready for a second coat in a few hours, but times vary by product, so check the label. Paint takes up to a few weeks to fully cure, so wait before scrubbing or washing a freshly painted wall.
Can I paint when it’s cold or humid?
Most latex paints need temperatures above about 50°F while applying and drying, and some formulas are rated lower. Avoid painting in high humidity, in direct hot sun, or when rain is expected. Check the can for the product's temperature range.
How do I store or dispose of leftover paint?
Seal the lid tightly, store the can away from freezing and heat, and label it with the room and color name for touch-ups. Don't pour paint down a drain. Check your town's household hazardous waste rules for disposal.
What’s the difference between interior and exterior paint?
Exterior paint is formulated to handle sun, rain, and temperature swings, while interior paint is designed to resist scuffs and be easy to clean. Use each one where it was made for.
