A fresh coat of paint is one of the fastest, most affordable ways to transform a room. But the difference between an amateur result and a professional-looking finish almost always comes down to preparation and technique, not the paint itself. Here's how to do it right.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Before you start, make sure you have everything on hand: quality paint, primer, a roller and roller covers, angled brushes for cutting in, painter's tape, drop cloths, a paint tray, and a putty knife with spackle for repairs. Buying quality tools up front saves frustration later.
Step 2: Prep the Room
Move furniture to the center and cover it, then lay down drop cloths. Remove outlet covers and switch plates. Fill any nail holes or cracks with spackle, let it dry, and sand smooth. Wipe down the walls to remove dust and grease, since paint won't adhere well to a dirty surface.
Step 3: Tape and Protect
Apply painter's tape along trim, baseboards, window frames, and the ceiling line. Press the edge down firmly so paint can't bleed underneath. Take your time here, as clean lines are what make a job look professional.
Step 4: Prime When Needed
Primer is essential when covering dark colors, painting over stains, or working with new drywall. It creates an even base and helps your topcoat go on true and last longer. For minor repaints in a similar color, a paint-and-primer-in-one may be enough.
Step 5: Cut In the Edges
Using an angled brush, paint a two to three inch border around the edges of the wall, in the corners, and along the trim and ceiling. This is called cutting in, and it lets you get into areas a roller can't reach cleanly.
Step 6: Roll the Walls
Load your roller and apply the paint in a W or M pattern, then fill it in without lifting the roller. Work in sections and maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks. Most jobs need two coats, letting the first dry fully before the second.
Step 7: Clean Up
Remove the painter's tape while the final coat is still slightly wet to get the crispest line. Clean your brushes and rollers promptly, and store leftover paint labeled for touch-ups.
